This typescript regimental history, written by Cullen A. Battle, describes the organizing, the troop movements, and the battles of the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment. Of particular interest are his descriptions of the battles of Seven Pines, Antietam, Gettysburg, and Chancellorsville and of what happened to individual Confederates during the four years of war. Battle also includes commentaries from other participants and quotes from military orders and official records.

Cullen Andrews Battle was a lawyer who served as a major general for the Confederates in the Civil War. In 1861 he organized the Tuskegee Light Infantry which was attached to the 3rd Alabama. Battle and his regiment fought at Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Winchester, and Cedar Creek. After the war he returned to his law practice. The Third Alabama Infantry Regiment was organized at Montgomery in April, 1861. It was the first Alabama command that was sent to Virginia. Mustered into service at Lynchburg, 4 May, the regiment was ordered to Norfolk. There it was in a temporary brigade with the 1st and 12 VA, under Col. Jones M.
